Football: Mauritania beats Gambia 2-0 in soccer friendly

Banjul, Gambia - Visiting Mauritania on Wednesday defeated hosts Gambia 2-0 in a international friendly match at the Independence stadium in Bakau, Gambia.

Goals from Abdulie Gueye in the 27th minute and from Dukite Sey in the 64th were enough for  the visitors to carry the day in the first of a two-match tie between the two West African nations.

The second friendly match against the Mauritanians will be played 2 March.

The matches are part of the preparations for Gambia's 2014 World Cup qualifier against the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire, Gambia’s Football Association (GFA) said in a press statement last week.

Mauritania, in the same qualifying group with The Gambia, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco and Tanzania, withdrew due to “financial problems”.
