Opposition wants new electoral commission created-Mauritania

Claiming that the Mauritanian National Electoral Commission (CENI) failed in last year's municipal and legislative elections, the Coalition for a Peaceful Alternative (CPA), which includes three moderate opposition parties, Wednesday called for the appointment of a new electoral umpire in the country.

In a statement, issued here Wednesday, CPA said that under a new CENI, the president and other elected politicians would be 'chosen on a consensual basis'.

It alleged that the 'old' CENI manipulated the last polls in favour of the ruling party.

The CPA is made up of the Progressive Popular Alliance (PPA), the social and democratic agreement Party (EI WIAM) and Sawab.
