Sugar production Mauritius - Sugar production in Mauritius has declined, from 435,509 in 2011 to 409,200 tons in 2012, according to the Ministry of Agro-industry and Food Security.
The production fetched the country 10.2 billion rupees (US$338 million)
A ministry official said Tuesday that the 2012 harvest was affected by drought and fire in the cane fields, as well as the abandonment of cane cultivation.
According to him, the government is aware of the steady decline, in the past five years, of acreage cultivation and sugar production.
