Maternal and child mortality in Mauritania

Japan grants US$100,000 to Mauritania to reduce maternal and child mortality - The Japanese government has given Mauritania a grant of US$100,000 (about 27.5 million Ouguiya) to help the country renovate and equip the Amitié Hospital in the district of Arafat, in the capital, Nouakchott, the Japanese diplomatic embassy in Mauritania said on Saturday.

The grant would enable the Spanish NGO, Médecins du monde, to equip the hospital with children's block, acquire medical equipment, beds and mattress, among other thing.

This is expected to enhance the capacity of the hospital and reduce maternal and child mortality, one of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

With one year to the deadline of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015, the prevalence rate for maternal and child mortality remains very high with figures putting it at more than 600 deaths for every 100,000 live births.
