The European Union (EU) will continue to help Niger on security matters, as security challenges facing Niger will also rob off on the sub-region, the EU Council President, Herma Van Rompuy, pledged at a joint press conference here Thursday with the Nigerien Head of State, Mahamadou Issoufou.
Van Rompuy, who had just ended a one-day visit to Niamey, said 'We are here to manifest our solidarity with the people of Niger in all their efforts.'
He also welcomed the democratic achievements made in Niger, hailing its leaders who, according to him, have managed to 'opt for the most respectful development model in the world'.
Also speaking at the conference, President Issoufou welcomed the many efforts the EU had made in Niger, saying he was particularly delighted that the support was consistent with the priorities of his administration's programme on democracy, defence and development.
On defence, President Issoufou noted the effective participation of the EU in the UN integrated Strategy for Sahel, aimed at fighting different terrorist threats and organized crime in the area.
