Over-exploitation of white grouper fish

Greenpeace warns Senegal against over-exploitation of white grouper fish - Greenpeace on Saturday urged the Senegalese authorities to urgently put in place a strategy to save the white grouper fish, which has become an endangered species due to years of over-exploitation.

An official of the environmental NGO Greenpeace-Africa, Ahmed Diame, speaking in Dakar at the launch of a campaign dubbed 'Let’s Save the White Grouper', cautioned that the fish, which was in the past abundant in Senegalese waters, might become unknown to the younger generation because it faces extinction.

He said that the white grouper was being fished in Senegal at an alarming rate although the number has drastically reduced.

He stressed the need for every actor, including the fishermen, government and consumers, to be involved in the efforts to save the white grouper while pledging Greenpeace’s availability to help.

He suggested the creation of ocean reserves and a ban on export of the grouper.
