Bank: Jonathan nominates leading private banker as new CBN Governor

Central Bank of Nigeria - Following his suspension of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday nominated the head of Nigeria’s leading private bank, Zenith, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, to the Senate for confirmation as the new CBN Governor.

Mr. Emefiele, the Chief Executive Officer and Group Managing Director of Zenith bank, will replace Sanusi, who was suspended for alleged “acts of financial recklessness and misconduct”.

President Jonathan also nominated Mr. Adelabu Adebayo Adekoya to the Senate for confirmation as deputy governor of the apex bank.

In a letter read to Senators at the end of Thursday's session by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Jonathan said: 'In view of the fact that the tenure of the current Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will end on 1 June, 2014, and pursuant to the provisions section 8(1) and (2) of the CBN Act, 2007, I hereby forward the name of Mr. Godwin I. Emefiele for kind consideration and confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for appointment as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).'

Mr. Emefiele has over 18 years of banking experience.

Seeking confirmation for Adekola as deputy CBN governor, the President wrote: 'In line with the provisions of section 8(1) and (2) of the CBN Act, 2007, I hereby forward the name of Mr. Adelabu Adebayo Adekola for kind consideration and confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for appointment as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.'

Adekola is an executive director with the First Bank PLC.
