Guinea: EU grants Guinea 8.4m euros for water projects

Water projects Guinea - The European Commission on Wednesday approved a loan of 8.4 million euros for Guinea to enable the West African nation provide potable water for its citizens in rural and semi-urban areas, the European bloc said in a statement obtained by PANA here.

It said the move was part of the initiative to help Guinea reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year 2015.

The funds will target the regions of N’Zerekore in the South and Kankan in the East and will contribute to reinforcing the capacities of the Guinean national service of potable water (SNAPE) in its efforts to provide water in the rural and semi-urban areas.

“This project is to support Guinean government’s efforts to reduce the death rates among children and the youth through enhancing hygiene and child health. It will also strengthen the capacities of the local governors in terms of access to basic services for local populations,' the head of the European Union delegation in Guinea, Philippe Van Damme, indicated.

The EU said that although access to drinking water has improved in Guinea over the last few years, the regions of N’Zerekore and Kankan still lacked the facility.
