Police arrest opposition UDP members in Gambia

Gambian police have arrested several members of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) in the West Coast region, including the executive of the party's youth wing, for alleged illegal gathering, UDP sources told PANA on Monday.

UDP Youth Wing Secretary, Solo Sandeng, told PANA that the arrests took place in Kombo South village of Madiyana on Friday while the executive members were on a tour to meet the newly selected committee members in Kombo South.

He said those arrested were being detained at four police stations in the West Coast region, namely Tanji, Tujereng, Sangany and Gunjur.

Those arrested include Jerreh Fatty, Treasurer, Fakeba Kolly, Vice President, Falang Sonko, Coordinator and Lang Marong, Propaganda Secretary.

The othrs are Maimuna Darboe, Baby Sonko, Lamin Sonko, Yaya Njie, Ousman Drammeh, Kawsu Jaiteh, Saikou Kanteh, Foday Gassama and Nato Jaiteh.

“The officer commanding the Tujereng police told me that the opposition members were arrested for gathering in public space without permit,” Sandeng said.
