Press law - The Togolese Journalists Unions have called out their members to a peaceful demonstration Tuesday in front of the the National Parliament building here as parliamentarians prepare to vote on the bill amending laws of the High authority of audio-visual and communication (HAAC), reliable sources told PANA here Monday.
If adopted, the amendment will give more powers to the HAAC which, the unions believe, will gag the media in Togo.
The call to demonstrate was made by the National Council of the press employers (CONAPP), the Togolese media watchdog, OTM, the Union of Togo’s independent journalists (UJIT), the National Trade Union of the journalists (SYNJIT), the African journalists network for human security and peace (RAJOSEP), and SOS journalists in danger.
They said that passing the bill will amount to a unilateral decision by the Togolese government against the freedom of the press.
