Daily Observer Gambia - Three staff members of the Daily Observer, Gambia’s biggest newspaper, have been arrested and detained by the country's National Intelligence Agency (NIA), PANA learnt gere Friday.
The journalists are Alhagie Jobe (Editor-In-Chief), Assan Sallah (New Editor) and Madikhan Jobarteh, who works at the production department.
Jobe was arrested by the NIA last week and he is still being held at the agency's headquarters in the capital city of Banjul.
A source at the paper told PANA that Jobe’s arrest is in connection with the alleged attempt to facilitate political asylum for an unnamed person.
While Jobe and Sallah remain in detention, Jobarteh was released the same day he was arrested.
Asked to confirm the trio’s arrest, the spokesperson of The Gambia Police Force, Assistant Superintendent David Kujabi, told PANA on phone : “I wouldn’t know, I have been away for a week.”
