South Africa: Pistorious appears in SA court

Pistorious appears in SA court - An extremely emotional Oscar Pistorious sobbed uncontrollably ahead of his bail hearing at a Pretoria court on Friday afternoon. The famous paralympian, who is nicknamed the blade runner because of his carbon fibre prosthetic legs, spent the night in police custody after killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Thursday morning at his luxury Pretoria home.

He reportedly claimed he thought she was an intruder when he opened fire, but there are unconfirmed reports that there was a loud altercation before the shooting and that she was shot four times through a bathroom door.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) indicated that it would bring a case of premeditated murder against the star and it opposed bail.

Magistrate Desmond Nair is expected to make a bail ruling later on Friday.

The athlete, who made history by qualifying to compete with able-bodied athletes at the 2012 London Olympics, has double below-knee amputations.

He took part in his first international competitions for able-bodied athletes in 2007.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he entered the men's 400 metres race and was part of South Africa's 4 × 400 metres relay team.

He also took part in the 2012 Summer Paralympics where he won gold medals in the men's 400 metre race in a Paralympic record time of 46.68 seconds.
