Cotonou , Benin - Benin police on Wednesday announced that all motorcycles in the country should be registered by 1 August 2014 to guarantee ownership and check theft.
The registration of two and three-wheel vehicles is part of a national exercise by police to combat stealing of cycles that has been on the rise.
Police Commissioner Louis Tokpanou said action would be taken against recalcitrant owners of motorcycles from 2 August.
He said owners of motorcycles must have licence number plate to enhance identification and security and also deter thieves who would not easily sell stolen cycles in the country.
Some 350 stolen motorcycles were among a number of cycles seized in Calavi and Cotonou in one month.
