SA Olympic hero arrested after fatal shooting - South Africa’s famous paralympian Oscar Pistorious is in police custody after killing his model girlfriend at his Pretoria home in the early hours of Thursday morning, the police said.
The double amputee paralympian athlete, who has carbon fibre prosthetic legs, made history by qualifying to compete with able-bodied athletes at the 2012 London Olympics.
He claims he thought his model girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was an intruder when he opened fire, hitting her four times.
Eyewitnesses said a convoy of 12 cars arrived at the Boschkop police station in Pretoria shortly after Pistorius was taken into custody .
He was transferred to the Mamelodi hospital for blood tests and was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court later on Thursday afternoon.
Pistorius, who has double below-knee amputations, took part in his first international competitions for able-bodied athletes in 2007.
However, his Flex-Foot Cheetah carbon fibre transtibial prostheses gave rise to claims that he had an unfair advantage over able-bodied runners.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruled him ineligible for competitions conducted under its rules, including the 2008 Summer Olympics, but this decision was reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2008.
Interestingly, the court ruled that, since he was slower out of the blocks than able-bodied athletes, he did not enjoy an advantage.
Although eligible to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Pistorius did not qualify for the South African team.
At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he entered the men's 400 metres race and was part of South Africa's 4 × 400 metres relay team.
He also took part in the 2012 Summer Paralympics where he won gold medals in the men's 400 metre race in a Paralympic record time of 46.68 seconds.
