Security: Mali cancels festival on the Niger over security concerns

Festival on the Niger - The 2013 edition of the Festival on the Niger, scheduled for 12-17 in Segou, Central Mali, has been cancelled following the war in Mali, organizers announced here Wednesday.


In place of the festival, organizers said they will host an international symposium on culture and governance as well as an exhibition of art on peace and social cohesion.

They said that the symposium was aimed at contributing to the consolidation of peace, tolerance, governance, reconciliation and restoration of the country’s territorial integrity.

The Festival on Niger is an annual event that brings together thousands of people, intellectuals, Malians and foreign artists, among others.

It a cultural festival that celebrates the music, dance and tradition of the Segou region in Mali.

The festival takes place on the banks of the Niger River in the ancient capital of the Bambara kingdom.

Musicians who have played in past festivals include Femi Kuti, King Mensah, Amadou & Mariam, Oumou Sangare and many more.
