Bujumbura, Burundi - At least 51 persons were killed Sunday night by flash flood, triggered by heavy rains in the northern suburbs of the capital city, Bujumbura, according to the provisional death toll released Monday by the Burundian Ministry of Public Security.
PANA reports that some areas and streets offered the sad spectacle of a real hurricane aftermath, with roofs and walls of residential houses destroyed, with the mud that had made the roads almost impassable on flooded streets
The main highway to the Bujumbura International Airport was still hardly feasible by mid-day due to the overflow of several streams and rivers along the highway.
The ministry said that other important roads leading to the DR Congo (DRC) and Rwanda were also damaged by the torrential rains. They remained closed to traffic until late Monday morning.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Bujumbura, Saidi Juma, has appealed for national and international assistance for victims.
