Port-Louis, Mauritius - Heavy rains which started on Tuesday evening, pounding the length and breadth of Mauritius, has virtually crippled the Island nation, according to a PANA Correspondent here.
As a result of the rains, schools across the country have been closed and huge traffic jam reported on the slippery roads after rising water deposited debris on them. Houses have also been washed away in several regions.
The meteorological department had announced early Wednesday that torrential rains, accompanied by sweeping storms, had hit the island.
According to the weather forecasters, the rains measuring about 100 millimetres, are continuing.
