Marine security - The US will back the Sao Tome and Principe government in its bid to tighten maritime security on the island, according to a top official of the US embassy here.
Dante Paradiso, the second secretary of the US embassy to Sao Tome, gave this indication after a meeting with the Sao Tome and Principe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Natalia Umbelina.
Paradiso said the US move was because Sao Tome and Principe was good strategic partner of the US in the Gulf of Guinea.
'We tackled several important issues on security and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and analyzed the response capacity of Sao Tome and the business opportunities in the region,' he said.
The diplomat said that the US government had already offered Sao Tome and Principe two boats, a radar and computer system and trained their naval officers and ratings so they can deal with the security challenges.
