Development Agenda - Mauritian Foreign Affairs Minister Arvin Boolell, said here Tuesday that it is important to react promptly to sustainable development because time is of essence.
Addressing a gathering of people from the public and private sectors and the civil society Boolell said the approach to sustainable development should be inclusive, adding 'We are all on board and we all have to think positively and react in a manner which will enable us to achieve the goals set by the millennium objectives.:
Also addressing participants, the UN Resident Coordinator, Simon Springett, observed that with the MDGs due to expire at the end of 2015, the international community has started to tackle the inevitable follow-up question -- ‘What comes next?’
'A new agenda to continue our efforts to ensure an inclusive and responsive development agenda beyond 2015 is slowly but surely taking shape. The UN has designed a comprehensive consultative process and remains committed to an open, inclusive and transparent process in the development of this agenda,' he said.
The discussions among the participants focused on three main aspects -- 'Should the eight existing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) be maintained post 2015? Should any of the eight existing MDGs be clustered or removed? and Do we need to adopt new goals for the post-2015 framework?'
