Burundian journalist arrested over charges of attempted murder

The coordinator of the online press agency, “SYFIA Grands Lacs”, Desire Nshimirimana, was arrested Friday and detained at the Ngozi central prison, in northern Burundi, accused of “attempted murder”, Burundi's African public radio (RPA) announced here.

The radio said the journalist was arrested following a recent grenade attack on his neighbour, Marc Masumbuko, over a land dispute in his Ngozi home province.

Both sides were to appear in court on 4 January to resolve the dispute.

The radio said that a grenade was thrown into Masumbuko’s house the day before they were to appear in court.

The report said Masumbuko was rushed to the King Faysal hospital, located in neighboring Rwanda, where is still under medical attention.

“SYFIA Grands Lacs” trains journalists from Burundian, Rwandan and DR Congolese journalists.
