Herve Renar AFCON 2013 - CAF disciplines Zambian coach over 'offensive' comments. African soccer's governing body, CAF, has slammed on Zambia's flamboyant coach Herve Renard a suspended fine of US$10,000 and a warning, after he made comments which the body deemed offensive.
'The (CAF) organising committee accepted the apology of the coach. However, in order to ensure the non-repetition of such behavior which tarnishes the image of CAF and its officials, the Committee decided to issue M. Renard a warning and impose a suspended fine of 10.000 US dollars upon him, provided no repetition of such behavior occur within the coming year,' a CAF statement obtained by PANA here Friday said.
Renard was dragged to the 2013 Nations Cup organising committee after he said in a newspaper interview, following Zambia's elimination from the 2013 tournament, that CAF does not want Zambia to play in the Confederation Cup hence it was happy that the Nations Cup defending champion was eliminated.
The winner of the two-yearly Africa Cup of Nations represents Africa at the annual Confederation Cup, the 2013 edition of which will be hosted by Brazil.
“To be honest with you I think that CAF is very happy because Zambia is not going to play the Confederations Cup...Because (they think) Zambia is not sexy enough to go to the Confederations … it’s the truth,” the Frenchman said.
Zambia was ousted from the 2013 Nations Cup at the group stage, where it drew all its three matches.
