African Union special summit on employment holds in Ouagadougou

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire - African leaders will hold a special summit on employment and poverty reduction in Burkina Faso next September, according to a communique issued by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and received by PANA here Monday.

The special summit follows a decision of the AU leaders, taken at their just-ended 22nd ordinary session in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

It is aimed at implementing the 2004 Ouagadougou Declaration on employment and poverty reduction.

It will undertake a complete inventory of progress and difficulties in the implementation of both the Ouagadougou Declaration and action plan of 2004, and revise new programmes on employment and poverty reduction.

To be known as 'Ouaga+10', the summit will also work on the adoption of a concrete roadmap for the 2014-2024 decade and present a common position of African leaders in the framework of the elaboration of post-2015 development agenda.

This special summit will be preceded by a ministerial meeting in march in Namibia.

PAN recalls that the first such summit was held in September 2004 in Ouagadougou.
