AFCON: Nigerian soccer fan dies watching match against Cote d'Ivoire

The tension-soaked match between Nigeria and Cote d'Ivoire, in the quarter-final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, may have led to the death of a Nigerian football fan who suddenly slumped while watching the match.

According to the local media, the 40-year-old fan, identified as Moshood Owolabi, an engineer based in Nigeria's South-west city of Abeokuta, apparently suffered a heart attack after Victor Moses missed a close shot.

Owolabi was reportedly rushed to a nearby clinic, where he was given first aid before being referred to another hospital.

But sources at the second hospital where Owolabi was taken said he was brought in dead, and that efforts to revive him failed.

Nigeria won the match 2-1 to advance to the semi-final, where it will take on Mali Wednesday.

Nigerian football fans are among the most passionate about the game, and the passion rises to a crescendo when their national team, the Super Eagles, are engaged in an international tournament like the Nations Cup and the World Cup.
