UNSMIL: Ismael Ould Ahmed appointed deputy head of UNSMIL

UN support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has appointed Mauritanian Ismael Ould Cheikh Ahmed deputy head of the UN support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Ahmed replaces George Charpentier of Finland, UN Spokesman Farhan Haq has announced, saying the Mauritanian will also serve as the Resident Coordinator of the UNDP in Libya.

Ahmed has more than 27 years' experience within the UN system, especially in the areas of development and humanitarian assistance, and has served in Africa, the Middle East and eastern Europe.

He was the Resident Coordinator of the UN and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria and Libya from 2008 to 2014.
