Gambian schools exempted from new work days, hours

Official working hours Gambia - Gambia's new official working hours and days have come into force but the country's schools are unaffected by the new development, the presidency announced here Monday.

“Following an earlier press release on the implementation of a four-day working week, the Office of the President hereby informs the general public, especially parents, teachers and students, that schools are exempted from this arrangement,” the presidency said.

“Schools will continue to operate from Mondays to Fridays as usual,' it said.

This latest presidential announcement supersedes a directive by the Gambian Basic Education Ministry that all schools in the country would observe the new work days and hours.

The Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh, recently stated that the new working hours and days were geared towards giving workers “more time for prayers, agriculture” and other social activities.

But the announcement has attracted criticisms from opposition leaders and the Gambia Workers Confederation.
