Abuja, Nigeria - The ECOWAS Commission has congratulated national teams from the bloc for their sterling performances at the on-going African Cup of Nations football tournament in South Africa.
In a goodwill message to the teams, the President of the Commission, Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo, noted with pride that seven of the region’s eight representatives have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 16-nation tournament, with Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana topping their respective groups.
The other quarter-finalists from the Region are Nigeria, Mali, Togo and tournament debutants Cape Verde.
The president said the exploits of “Teams ECOWAS” bore eloquent testimony to the region’s reputation as the powerhouse of African football, adding that the Community and its more than 300 million citizens were solidly behind them.
On behalf of the Commission and other Community Institutions, he enjoined the West African players to continue to demonstrate their trademark brilliance and exemplary sportsmanship.
"More importantly, you should ensure that the coveted continental trophy comes to the region," Ouédraogo added.
