France: UNESCO to launch book on the universe

Paris, France - The Large Hadron Collider, a book about a machine designed to study the beginning of the universe, will be launched at UNESCO on 10 November, the UN agency said in a press statement from its Paris, France, headquarters.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator conceived to recreate the conditions that existed just after the Big Bang, the statement indicated.

It is housed 100 metres underground at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, Switzerland).

Devoted to a state-of-the-art scientific instrument, LHC takes the form of a richly illustrated art book, highlighting the links between art and science.

It is a joint endeavour by CERN Director Rolf-Dieter Heuer, writer Franzobel, and photographer Peter Ginter. It is published by Edition Lammerhuber, with UNESCO’s support.

LHC will be presented at the launch by UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and Rolf-Dieter Heuer, as a side-event of UNESCO’s 36th General Conference.

CERN was established following a decision by UNESCO’s 1950 General Conference, held in Florence, Italy.
