France: Mauritania's new ambassador in France threatened with prosecution

The Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA). a Mauritanian NGO, has asked lawyers to prepare a charges of 'complicity in slavery' against the new ambassador of Mauritania in Paris, Cheyakh Ould Ely, according to the president of the NGO, Biram Ould Abeid. 'While he was chief of staff of the transitional President, Ely Ould Mohamed Vall, the ambassador was involved in a case of slavery. Our lawyers are examining ways to bring this case to court,' Abeid said at a meeting in Paris, France, on socio-political situation in Mauritania.

He did not give details of the alleged slavery case.

Ely has not yet presented his credentials to the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy.
