Tripoli, Libya - The European Union (EU) foreign policy chief, Ms. Catherine Ashton, on Saturday in Tripoli announced that the union would give Libya 10 million euros aid for capacity-building of institutions and female organizations.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the first women's world conference, she paid tribute to Libyan women for their sacrifices, affirming that they constituted a source of inspiration for women in the world.
According to Ms. Ashton, democracy and women's rights were inseparable, saying Libyan women must be granted the right to participate in the next stage of the change in the country.
She invited women to assume their responsibilities and not to forget the enormous sacrifices they had made.
Ms. Ashton asked that women's rights be recorded in the new Constitution given that they constituted one of the pillars of the Libyan revolution.
Ms. Ashton on Saturday also inaugurated the new bureau of the EU in Tripoli intended to reinforce cooperation between Libya and the European organisation.
