Nigeria: 'Electricity generation in Nigeria hits all-time high'

Electricity generation in Nigeria hits all-time high - Electricity generation in Nigeria has hit an all-time high of 4,242.7 megawatts, the local media Tuesday quoted Minister of Power Barth Nnaji as saying. 'On Friday, September 17, 2011, Nigeria attained the highest quantum of power ever. We achieved 3,982.7MW. This figure does not include the 260MW maintained as spinning reserve, which is used for system stability. I am glad to report that all the 3,982.7MW now produced in Nigeria goes into the national grid without difficulty.

'In other words, the attained generation is now 4,242.7MW,' the minister said at a workshop on the power sector in the capital city of Abuja.

Prof. Nnaji said there were credible reports of a noticeable improvement in power supply in many parts of the country, and that the government hoped to achieve the target of 5,000MW this year and
hit 6,000MW in 2012.

PANA reports, however, that the reported improved generation has yet to translate to a steady supply of electricity to residences and businesses, especially in the economic nerve centre of Lagos.

'I don't know where the generated power is being channeled to, because I have been running my generator for the past two days,' said a businesswomen, Felicia Johnson. 'It is like nothing has
really changed in terms of power supply.'

Epileptic power supply has over-tasked individuals, who have had to provide their own powers through generators, and crippled many companies, some of which have fled to neighbouring countries.
