Cairo, Egypt - The interim ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces in Egypt (SCAF) Tuesday officially announced that the first round of the People’s Assembly elections would be held 28 November. The elections of the assembly (Lower House) will be held in three rounds, with two weeks seperating each.
SCAF also declared that the first round of the Shura Council (Upper House) elections would be held 29 January, 2012.
The Upper House elections will also be held in three rounds, with two weeks seperating each, meaning that by mid March 2012, Parliament will be able to hold its first gatherings in the post-revolution era in Egypt.
Elections are to be conducted through the direct and secret ballot system, with two-thirds of the seats to be elected under the closed party lists and one-third through the individual system.
No date has been officially set for presidential election, which is expected to be held in late 2012, after a popular approval of a new constitution, which is to be drafted by an elected panel from the new Parliament.
