Paris, France - Dozens of Chadians on Monday took to the streets in Paris, France, in a march, organized by the National Council for Democratic Change (NCCD), to protest against 'the election sham in Chad.' Protesters, including former high-ranking Chadian figures, marched from the Square of Human Rights to the Chadian Embassy, chanting slogans against the regime of President Idriss Deby. They were blocked by the police, who prevented them from approaching the embassy. 'At the moment when claims against presidencies for life, for more freedom and democratic change are shaking the Arab and African world, it is unacceptable that Chad gives the world this ridiculous image of a family, predator, obscurantist (hiding spread of knowledge) and arrogant power for the sole reason that ldriss Deby has strong personal ties in Paris,' said coordinator of NCCD, Annette Laokolé.
Demonstrators expressed support for three opposition candidates who boycotted the presidential election held Monday.
The boycott followed the government's refusal to rectify the shortcomings raised by the opposition during February’s legislative elections.
Set up earlier this year, NCCD is composed of members of the politico-military rebellion and civil society representatives.
It wants a national forum held in Chad to implement a programme leading to free, transparent and democratic elections.
