Cotonou, Benin - Benin's Constitutional Court Monday confirmed the re-election of President Yayi Boni for another 5-year term, following the presidential election held 13 March, According to the result announced Friday by the electoral commission, the President scored 53.14 percent of the votes cast, hence was elected in the first round. He garnered 1,579,550 votes out of 3,111,833 votes (53.14 per cent), against 1,059, 396 votes, or 35.64 per cent for his main challenger and opposition candidate Adrien Houngbedji.
The former president of the West African Development Bank (BOAD), Abdoulaye Bio Tchane, initially considered as one of the favorite candidates, got only 182,280 votes, or 06.14 per cent.
The president-elect is expected to be sworn in 6 April, after all appeals must have been heard.
Boni was elected for the first time 6 April 2006.
