UNAMID supports polio campaign in North Darfur - An anti-polio vaccination campaign targeting almost half a million children under-five years in Darfur has received logistical and material support from the UN-AU Mission in Darfur, UNAMID.
The hybrid force said in a statement issued on Thursday in Khartoum that a polio vaccination campaign being conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the support of UNAMID, started on Thursday in North Darfur and would continue until 24 November.
About 460,550 children under-five years are being targeted for immunization.
“The polio campaign is important as neighbouring Chad has recently reported an outbreak of 119 polio cases,' statement said.
It explained that UNAMID is supporting the campaign by transporting personnel and cargo to the remote areas of Tine and Um Barru, near Chad, as well as 300 kg of vaccines and vitamins.
