Algeria: Rabah Madjer to be named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador

Algerian ex-international, Rabah Madjer, to be named UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador - UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, will designate Rabah Madjer, the famous Algerian footballer, as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador at a ceremony at the Organization’s Headquarters on 12 October. The two-year appointment is in recognition of Madjer’s work with young people and for his promotion of sports values, UNESCO said in a press statement from here.

As one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers and as a well-known sports broadcaster, Madjer will place his fame at the service of UNESCO, building tolerance and mutual understanding through sports.

Born in 1958, Madjer became a star with F.C. Porto in the 1980s and played for the Algerian national team in two World Cups, including its first World Cup appearance in 1982.

He took up a coaching career immediately after retiring and managed several clubs as well as the Algeria National team. Madjer, a television commentator for Al-Jazeera Sports, has won the Ballon d’or Africain.

UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassadors are an outstanding group of personalities who use their talent and status to focus the world's attention on the objectives and aims of UNESCO --  creating visibility for its work in education, culture, science, communication and information.
