 African Online Digital Library

African Online Digital Library ATRIX, working in cooperation with the African Studies Center at MSU, and in partnership with premiere research institutions in Africa, is pioneering the African Online Digital Library. The goal of this fully accessible online digital repository is to adopt the emerging best practices of the American digital library community and apply them in an African context.
AODL benefits a wide variety of scholars, students, and institutions by producing multilingual, multimedia materials for both scholarly research and public viewing audiences. AODL serves scholars and students conducting research and teaching about West and South Africa as well as teachers and students of African languages in both the United States and Africa. It also provides a valuable model for creating and distributing a diverse array of materials in a region with very limited electronic connectivity.

 Africabib

Africabib AfricaBib is the culmination of twenty-five years of Africana research.
The site consists of two bibliographic databases covering Africana periodical literature (Bibliography of Africana Periodical Literature Database)  and African Women's literature (African Women's Database).  You will also find a comprehensive bibliography on women travelers and explorers to Africa (Women Travelers, Explorers and Missionaries to Africa: 1763-2004: A Comprehensive English Language Bibliography).
Work on the Africana periodical literature index began as a small project in 1974.  In those days, computers as we know them today did not exist. The project grew and was expanded over the years to include about 200 titles.  Unfortunately, it was still not accessible to researchers.  When computer technology did come along, a great deal of time over many years was taken to make the data computer accessible.
In recent years, more titles have been added to the periodical database.  Today the database indexes over 50,000 items that appear in over 415 periodical  titles.
In 1989 I had published a three volume work on Women in Africa during the International Women's Decade'.  This three volume work is the predecessor of the African Women's Bibliographic Database which today contains over 30,000 items from all different forms of media.
The women travelers bibliography grew out of a project to collect these materials that began over ten years ago.  After identifying materials on the subject, a comprehensive bibliography was the next step, since none had ever been compiled.
In recent years, the development of the World Wide Web changed the way that information would be disseminated forever.  Its development now allows people from all parts of the World to equally gain access to information.
The development of AfricaBib into internet databases in 1999 was the natural progression for a project of this size.  It can be updated `on-the-fly' and is accessible 24 hours a day worldwide.
The NT server housing the databases is at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's, Institute for Economic Advancement (IEA) in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The databases have been created and are maintained by Davis Bullwinkle who is the director of the IEA Research Library.
This is a service provided free to the World.  There will never be any advertising nor will there ever be any cost to the user to obtain information provided.
