Transport workers' strike Senegal - A strike called by Senegal's National Federation of Road Transport Workers has left the capital city of Dakar and other cities paralyzed since Monday. The two-day strike was called to protest high cost of fuel and insurance as well as incessant police harassment.
Before the strike, transporters had presented 11 demands to the authorities, which are yet to be met.
In Senegal, a litre of gasoline costs FCFA 860 (about US$1.72) while diesel sells for FCFA 820 (US$1.64).
As the strike bites hard, many commuters were forced to trek long distances, while others simply stayed at home.
Vehicles trying to break the strike were forced to a stop and their passengers asked to disembark.
Prime Minister Souleymane Ndiaye Ndéné will preside over an Inter-Ministerial Council meeting Tuesday to review the workers' demands.
