Nigeria: Attack on the base of the police mobile force

Nigeria police force 'demobilises' officers following attack on mobile police base - The Nigerian Police Force has demobilised all the personnel in the '34PMF', following last Sunday's attack on the base of the police mobile force (PMF) in the northern city of Gombe which left one officer and three of the attackers dead, police sources told PANA Friday. The directive to demobilise the personnel (meaning they will no longer serve in the elite PMF) was issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, and affected the Commanding Officer, Officers, Inspectors as well as the rank and file at the base. 'One unit each from 14 and 40 Police Mobile Force have reported for transfer to 34PMF Gombe,' the sources said, adding that all arms and munitions carted away by the attackers, suspected to be members of the Islamic group Boko Haram, have been recovered.

The surprise, pre-dawn bomb attack on the 34PMF left the base in ruins, with several operational vehicles and buildings set ablaze.

The local media reported Thursday that President Goodluck Jonathan was so displeased with the attack that he summoned key security agencies for a meeting aimed at preventing a recurrence.
