'Members of Mubarak's dissolved party can run in Egypt elections' - Egypt's Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) decided on Monday to suspend a previous court ruling, which would have prevented members of the now dissolved former ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) from participating in the forthcoming legislative elections in the country.
Egypt's official news agency, MENA, reported that the SAC panel, presided over by Judge Magdy El-Agaty, said depriving anyone of taking up his or her political rights is an attack on rights that are protected and guaranteed by Egypt's constitution.
A lower court in the Delta city of Mansoura had ruled Friday to ban NDP members from running, setting off a string of lawsuits nationwide aimed at removing such candidates from the race.
But the SAC ruling will now allow members of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's party to stand in the first elections since the January 25 revolution.
Many former NDP members have registered to run as independent candidates or on the platform of other parties in the elections, which are to start on 28 November.
