Cairo, Egypt - The interim ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces in Egypt (SCAF) on Monday issued a decree banning all persons who contributed to the ruining the political life of the north African country, from running in the upcoming legislative elections.
The SCAF decree which was reported by Egypt's state television, may mean that many, if not most, and perhaps all of the former members of the dissolved former ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) of ousted president Hosni Mubarak will not run in the 28 November legislative elections.
The degree stated, though, that proof of ruining political life has to be evident for victims to be deprived of their politicial rights.
The SCAF decree came despite a Supreme Administrative Court ruling nearly a week ago that allows officials of Mubarak's dissolved party to participate in the legislative elections.
The ruling said that depriving anyone from taking up his or her political rights was an attack on rights that are protected and guaranteed by Egypt's constitution.
The decree by Egypt's military council seems to be an attempt to appease angry anti-regime protests, who have been holding the biggest and most violent demonstrations in the country in the post-revolution era in the past few days.
The death toll from the demonstrations at Cairo's Tahrir square and other cities across the country, has risen to 23 dead and over 1,700 injured, according to the Egyptian health ministry.
