South Africa observes World Diabetes Day

Cape Town, South Africa - South Africa has joined the rest of the global community in Observing World Diabetes Day, marked every year 14 Nov. On Monday night, Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain, which has just claimed its place as one of the seven wonders of the world, was bathed in blue lights to showcase South Africa's and the city’s commitment to the commemoration.
As part of the observance of the World Diabetes Day, “Blue Lightings” occurred in about 100 countries around the world, where monuments and well known sights were lit up to show solidarity and support for the campaign.

Last year's campaign saw 1,036 monuments and buildings being lit up - an extraordinary international response.

The campaign, using the colour blue, is aimed at highlighting important issues about diabetes, encouraging the public to get screened for diabetes and emphasizing the fact that this 'silent killer' can be prevented, managed and treated.

Table Mountain was provisionally named one of the new seven wonders of nature by a global poll on Friday.

It is predicted that South Africa will gain an additional 108,000 international tourists a year due to the increased exposure of the mountain.

Also on the list was South America's Amazon, South America's Iguazu Falls, South Korea's Jeju Island, Indonesia's Komodo National Park, and the Philippines' Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
