Nigerian club driven by urge to feature in Club World Cup

CAF Champions League - With a semi-final ticket for the 2011 CAF Champions League in the kitty, Nigerian club Enyimba is already looking far ahead, to representing Africa at the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan 8-18 Dec.

The winner of Africa's more prestigious club football tournament qualifies to fly the continent's flag at the Club World Cup.

Enyimba boss Felix Anyasi-Agwu told the football website mtnfootball.com that featuring at the Club World Cup has been the main driving force behind the club’s recent surge in form on the continent.

“We are well motivated to win the Champions League because we were crowned continental champions twice without going for the Club World Cup due to its postponements. This hurts us a great deal,” Anyansi-Agwu said.

“With the current opportunity thrust at us, we are going to grab it with both hands and do a very good job by winning the CAF Champions League so as to go and display our brand of football at the world stage. This has been our motivation,” he said

Enyimba was the African champion in 2003 and 2004, but on both occasions could not feature in the competition because it was postponed, owing mainly to the collapse of FIFA marketing partner ISL.

In its quest for a third African title, the Nigerian club is due to take on Wydad Casablanca in Morocco 2 Oct, in the first leg of the semi-finals.

“We are going to Casablanca to win, with the worst case scenario being a draw and come back home to wrap up the game. We have a lot of experience going for us in this competition due to our past participation and we shall bring that to bear as we march towards our target,” Anyasi-Agwu said.
