Transporters strike in Senegal

Transporters return to work in Senegal after 2-day strike - Senegal's National Union of Road Transport Workers (SNTRS) has asked its members to return to work after a two-day strike, called to protest high cost of fuel and insurance as well as incessant police harassment. The union decided to end the strike after a day-long meeting with the government, which they believed did not lead to any fruitful outcome

However, the union has vowed to take an 'alternative plan of action' after the 12 Jan religious event, the Magal (pilgrimage at Touba,  the holy place of Mouridism).

They warned that the unspecified action would be total.

On Tuesday, Minister of State for Energy Ibrahima Sar announced the establishment of a commission to examine the issue of high fuel prices, but warned that fuel prices cannot be changed arbitrarily due to certain reasons.

On his part, Prime Minister Souleymane Ndiaye said he had ordered the Director-General of Police to ensure a reduction in unscheduled checks on transport vehicles.

The strike, which started on Monday, paralyzed social and economic activities in the capital city of Dakar as well as other cities.
