Sudan accuses South Sudan of backing rebel attacks

Khartoum, Sudan - Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday accused South Sudan of attacking an area in South Kordufan, a region inside Sudan. It said Khartoum's armed forces, however, repulsed the attacks and inflicted heavy losses on the  attackers. The Ministry said the Sudanese army had come under repeated attacks by forces from inside the territory of South Sudan fromTuesday until Wednesday but the 'the aggressors (were) pushed back'.

A statement issued by the official spokesperson of the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Obeid Murawah, said 'this aggression has not observed the national sovereignty of the Republic of the Sudan and its territorial integrity, by a state that wants to make itself an element of instability in the area and in the region'.

The statement said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had also complained to the UN Security Council on the aggression and requested the Council 'to add this complaint to several others filed by Khartoum against Juba, including those of providing support and assistance to rebel movements and providing safe haven for the rebel leadership, in addition to working to undermine security and stability, particularly in south Kordufan and the Blue Nile states'.

The Ministry of foreign affairs said it wanted the UN and all relevant UN bodies and the international community to shoulder their responsibility on the matter.

'Sudan reserves the right to defended its territories and the safety of its citizens by all political diplomatic and military means,' it added.
