Libya: Mustapha Abdeljelil lists priorities

Libya's rebel leader lists priorities - In his maiden address to the nation since routing Mouammar Kadhafi from power, the president of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC), Mr. Mustapha Abdeljelil, Monday listed priorities of the new administration as assistance to 'the families of martyrs, the wounded, the missing and the rebel fighters'.

Abdeljelil said the assistance would commence once all the Libyan territories had been liberated.

According to him, the youth, who played active roles in the revolution and the women will be considered for ministerial and ambassador posts, denying rumours of the country's slide to religious extremism and intolerance.

He said the NTC would strive to build on the rule of law and prosperity for the Libyan people, based on Islamic law.

Confirming that Islam was the main source of legislation in Libya, Abdeljelil asserted that the north African nation was a 'moderate Islamic country neither to the extreme left nor right'.

He urged his compatriots to unite and avoid discord and hatred, adding that they should spread the culture of tolerance and national reconciliation to ensure justice for all in the framework of state institutions and laws.

He appealed to the citizens 'not to violate the integrity of public servants who worked with the former regime and their families,' promising to pay the salaries of the Libyans and to find a mechanism for the disbursement of premiums for the unemployed.
